๐Ÿ›ž Red Flags When Buying a Used ATV or Side-by-Side

Used ATVs and side-by-sides can be a great buy โ€” or a money pit. The difference is usually how they were ridden. A quad that spent its life plowing a driveway is a very different machine than one that lived in deep mud holes. These are the red flags to look for before you buy.

Signs of water and mud abuse

  • Milky oil. Pull the dipstick. Oil that looks like chocolate milk means water got into the engine.
  • Water or mud in the airbox. Open it up. Dirt or water past the filter means the engine may have sucked it in.
  • Snorkel kits and mud tires. Not automatically bad, but they tell you it was built for deep water and mud. Inspect everything extra closely.
  • Wet CVT housing (belt-drive models). Water in the belt housing can ruin the belt and clutches. Ask if the drain plug has ever been pulled after a water crossing.
  • Dried mud packed in hard-to-reach spots like the frame rails, A-arms, and around the engine.

Drivetrain and suspension

  • Torn CV boots. The rubber boots on the axles. If they're torn, dirt gets into the joint and destroys it. Look for grease slung around the wheel area.
  • Clicking when turning. A worn CV joint will click on tight turns.
  • 4WD engagement. Test that four-wheel drive actually engages, and that the front differential lock works if it has one.
  • Ball joints and tie rods. Lift the front, grab each wheel at the top and bottom, then the sides. Any clunking or play means worn parts.
  • Belt slip or burning smell on CVT machines under hard acceleration.

Engine and general condition

  • Ask for a cold start โ€” have the seller leave it off before you arrive.
  • Look for oil or coolant leaks and listen for knocking.
  • Check the hour meter if it has one, and ask for maintenance records.
  • Look at the winch cable or rope โ€” a frayed one means heavy use.
  • Check the frame and A-arms for bends, cracks, or welds.
  • New plastics on an older machine can be covering a rollover.

Clutch tip: Take photos of the plastics, frame, CV boots, and tires. Clutch's SnapCheck can spot visible damage and estimate repair costs so you know what you're really paying for.

Paperwork

ATVs are a common target for theft. Find the VIN on the frame, check that it hasn't been tampered with, and make sure it matches the title or paperwork. Get a signed bill of sale with the VIN, price, date, and both names. Requirements for titles and registration depend on your state, so check what yours requires before you buy.

Walk away ifโ€ฆ

  • The oil is milky or there's mud past the air filter
  • 4WD doesn't engage
  • The VIN is missing, damaged, or doesn't match the paperwork
  • The seller won't let you see it start cold or test it

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a used ATV has been underwater?

Check for milky oil on the dipstick, water or mud inside the airbox past the filter, water in the CVT belt housing on belt-drive models, and dried mud packed into the frame and electrical connectors.

What does clicking mean on a used ATV?

Clicking when turning usually means a worn CV joint, often caused by a torn CV boot letting dirt in. Budget for a repair or use it to negotiate.

Is a used ATV with high hours a bad buy?

Not always. Maintenance history matters more than the number. A high-hour machine with records and regular oil changes can be a better buy than a low-hour one that was ridden hard in mud.
