๐งพ Rental Car Hidden Fees: What to Watch For (and How to Avoid Them)

That cheap daily rate you booked online is rarely what you pay. By the time taxes, fees, and counter upsells hit, the total can be a lot higher. Here are the fees to look for and how to dodge them.
Fees built into the price
- Airport concession recovery fee. Airport locations pass on the cost of operating at the airport. Renting from an off-airport location can be cheaper, even after a rideshare to get there.
- Customer facility charge. A daily charge at many airports to pay for rental car centers and shuttles.
- Local taxes and surcharges. These vary by city and state and can add up fast on longer rentals.
- Vehicle license or registration recovery fee. A small daily fee some companies add to cover registration costs.
Fees you can often avoid
- Fuel charges. Prepaid fuel and "we'll refill it" charges usually cost more than filling up yourself. Return it at the level you got it and keep the gas receipt.
- Toll passes. Many rental companies charge a daily fee for the toll transponder on top of the tolls โ sometimes for every day of the rental, not just the days you use it. Check if you can pay tolls online or bring your own transponder.
- Young driver fee. Drivers under 25 often pay a daily surcharge. Some memberships and companies reduce or waive it โ compare before booking.
- Additional driver fee. Some companies charge per extra driver per day. Spouses or partners are sometimes free depending on the company and state.
- One-way drop fee. Returning to a different location can cost extra. Compare a few pickup and drop-off combos.
- Upgrades and add-ons. GPS, satellite radio, and car seats add daily costs. Use your phone for navigation, and compare the cost of bringing your own car seat.
- Damage waivers. Check whether your own auto insurance or credit card already covers rentals before paying for the counter's coverage.
- Late return and cleaning fees. Return on time, and remove sand, pet hair, and trash to avoid extra charges.

- Go all the way to the final checkout screen and compare the total, not the daily rate.
- Compare airport and off-airport locations for the same dates.
- Read the toll and fuel policy before you leave the lot.
- Decline add-ons at the counter that you didn't plan on.
- Check your receipt at return and ask about any charge you don't recognize.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my rental car total so much higher than the daily rate?
Taxes and fees like airport concession recovery fees, customer facility charges, and local surcharges get added on top of the daily rate, plus any add-ons like toll passes, fuel plans, or damage waivers.
Is it cheaper to rent a car away from the airport?
It often is, because off-airport locations may not charge airport concession fees or customer facility charges. Compare the full total, including the cost of getting to the location.
How do I avoid rental car toll fees?
Read the company's toll policy before you leave. Some charge a daily transponder fee on top of the tolls. Paying tolls online, using cash lanes where available, or bringing your own transponder can save money.
