🌺 Renting a Car in Honolulu (Oahu)
On Oahu, a car is optional if you're staying in Waikiki — but it's the best way to see the North Shore, the east-side beaches, and the island's scenic drives.
Picking up at Honolulu airport (HNL)
Most major rental companies operate from the airport's consolidated rental car center, which opened in late 2021 at the airport. Follow the rental car signs after baggage claim.
Do you need a car in Waikiki?
- Hotel parking in Waikiki is expensive. If you're staying there, consider renting for just the days you'll leave town.
- Day-trip plan: rent for a day or two for the North Shore and an island loop, then return it.
- Beach parking fills up early at popular spots on weekends. Go early.
Island driving tips
- Never leave valuables in the car at beaches or trailheads — break-ins happen at popular stops.
- A small SUV or midsize car handles everything on the main roads. You don't need 4WD for typical sightseeing.
- Traffic into and out of Honolulu gets heavy at rush hour.
